Thanks to a valued MFF member and friend - Nookie, we may now introduce and draw awareness to essential points, which aren't generally known to our highly sexual local and foreign-based Fiji worldwide community: (i) HPV and virgins (ii) HPV and men (iii) HPV can even be spread through towels and razors if there are open lesions and contact is made through sharing. BEWARE. For those who have never had an iota of sexual experience (no kissing, nada), preserve yourself, get yourself examined and abstain until marriage, where it is imperative that the person with whom you will commit yourself to intimately, has also gotten himself/herself checked; For those who aren't sexually clueless, be it of the "safe sex" non-penetrative variety or exclusively oral only, to the all and every sexual congress there is, kindly have a care, make your sexual health appointment, out of respect and consideration for yourself, your sexual partner and our Fiji community. It is imperative for the sexually active, to responsibly wait for their sexual health exam results before daring to embark on any subsequent intimate relationship. Get yourself a (i) blood sample test (ii) mouth swab sample test (iii) genital swab sample test and (iv) an anal swab sample test. Any body fluid and tissue sample (sputum, urine, faeces, semen) testing for an extensive screening is to be expected, as is for HPV in women - a sample from the cervical area via a pap smear.
Be responsible. Be involved. Be active. Think progressively. Be informed. Encourage Fiji's community through the act and the initiative of one, to deal when and if it finds itself at your door; Protect you. Protect yours - Make that appointment. Prioritse your sexual healthcare. Do not fear treatment. Activate Disease Prevention! Activate Disease-free!
Do not bind yourself within the cocoon of shame, for comfort is over-rated. Speak out! Live out loud!
**Highly recommended reading for all parents and guardians of teens, for a much-needed parent-child "Sex Education Talk," on a subject matter that may not be relayed as well as it is in these select articles, that some virgins are as susceptible to contracting the disease.
"(14) Intromissive intercourse is not a prerequisite for HPV transmission, as women who remained virgins throughout a 2-year longitudinal study still had a 2-year cumulative HPV infection rate of 2.4%, and approximately 10% of virgins who engaged in nonpenetrative sexual contact (eg, finger-vulvar, penile-vulvar, oral-penile) were HPV-positive."
**A must read for Fiji's adult male population. Men at risk: Penile to anal, primarily for the anal recipient (penile and anal cancer); Mouth to penile/vulva (mouth and throat cancer has escalated to astronomical levels in the past years); Organ transplants; ...
"Less is known about the prevalence and patterns of HPV infection in men. Studies have established the incidence of HPV infection in men at 4% to 45%, with low rates generally reflecting the absence of a sensitive HPV testing method for males. Higher rates of infection are generally found in studies with soldiers or visitors to STI clinics, or men in their twenties. Lower infection rates were found in the general population samples with a higher median age. (13) In the United States, the prevalence of HPV infection in men is estimated to be approximately 30%. (13) However, because HPV is a "shared" virus, it is most likely that HPV prevalence rates in men and women are identical and that differences likely reflect the difficulty in detecting the virus in men as compared with women.
