Rerega as it is commonly known all around Fiji is synonymously used as a premarital skin treatment for the blemish free bride.
In the days of old and even today (for traditionalists), a young maiden would be kept indoors and away from her beau whilst undergoing 'cleansing' and 'beautification' treatments with rerega playing a major role depending on the recipes which have been passed down from generation to generation, where there will be distinctive variations from one House to another House from the different parts of Fiji, with the added foreign influences through marriage or exposure.
Basic Rerega Paste
Ingredients:
Rerega powder or pounded rerega root (Easily purchased at the Suva Market close to the very back near the taxi stand)
Fijian oil of your choice (100% pure)
Method:
(i) Add ingredients together in a bowl and apply to skin in a circular motion.
(ii) Use oil if treatment is for the long haul to remove and to reapply
(so you may continue with your in house activities) or remove using
plain yoghurt to reduce or completely remove 'the yellow stain.'
(iii) Wash off with hot water in the shower using half of a lemon as 'the loofah' on all areas where you applied the paste.
