The Tall Man by Chloe Hooper - Penguin Books

Death and Life on Palm Island

I am reading this book now. It is about the death of an Aboriginal man in custody and the story about the individuals and the community affected by it.

"One cannot "fix' The Dreaming in time: it was and is everywhere.' It was and is 'an age of heroes', when the Ancestral Spirits in animal and plant form journeyed, stopping to fight, make love, give birth - and leave the evidence of their adventures on the landscape. Doris's children would tales from the Dreaming and protest, 'Oh! You're getting it from library books.' But Doris had got it from stories she'd been told as a child." page 52

Great reviews from many Publishers.

Hope you can get it and enjoy.

Vinaka Kaline for your comments about American Taboo (made in Forum Topic "Princess Ashika").
In retrospect I recall thinking the same way about the volunteer's behaviour to her 'boyfriend' and others in the community.
I sidetracked my thoughts when I was reading because I knew most of the key characters who were still around in 2007.
You have pointed out some very independent views that I would not have picked up on and neither considered as important.
I guess that is the object'ive' lesson of 'an independent person' reviewing what happens internally. ie a local can get caught up either deliberately or naively in a situation and not see the nuances for nuisances.
I have not read the 'Lost In Paradise' version.

Another book I enjoyed was "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway.
"The clouds were building up now for the trade wind and he looked ahead and saw a flight of wild ducks etching themselves against the sky over the water, then blurring, then etching again and he knew no man was ever alone on the sea."
The Old Man and the Sea
I was given this book by my English teacher at College because he wanted me to learn the art of using simple language when writing and telling stories.

AND the classic play "The Importance of Being Ernest" by Oscar Wilde was a really fun read. Dont get the recorded version because so much is lost in conversion. The play on the written words as well as the spoken is very clever.

I am keen but the problem right now would be access to books but I would value recommended readings.
I do recommend "American Taboo- Murder in the Peace Corps" by Philip Weiss. American Taboo tells the story of the 1975 murder of Deborah Gardner, a 23-year-old Peace Corps volunteer on the island of Tonga.
I enjoyed its investigative style and the determination of the author to get to the truth. The ending is appropriate.
I also enjoyed the Pacific relevance of the storyline.
The title becomes relevant as the story unfolds.
Hope you can get a copy. I read this one in one night but then I have time in Tonga.
I am sure there is also relevance with other stories such as the Red Cross murders in Fiji a few years ago and even the coups and other issues regionally. Perhaps even the Princess Ashika sinking. Maybe a suitable title could be "Entrenched in the Tonga Trench".
